Image & Features of the Track
From the prow of the boat, a salty wind swept in. The traveler narrowed his eyes at the silhouette of islands rising from the turquoise sea. Sailing from Yonaguni to Ishigaki and on through the scattered islands of the Yaeyama chain, he was retracing a sea route once threaded with songs and stories.
Stepping ashore, he found white sand giving way to fields of swaying sugarcane, and somewhere in the distance a faint sanshin melody drifted toward him — Asatoya Yunta. It brought back the memory of a lullaby his grandmother had sung long ago. In the old song, the young woman Kuyama stands proud and resilient, even as the times and her circumstances shift around her.
By sunset, he was wandering narrow lanes lined with red-tiled houses before settling on a hill that looked out over the ocean. Between the hush of the tide, he caught the voices of local youths practicing the traditional yunta. A breeze lifted the coral-white sand, and above, the sky shifted from violet to indigo in slow gradations.
He opened his notebook and wrote: “Here, the legends don’t feel like distant tales. They’re breathing in the wind and light.” Like Kuyama’s song, these islands never lock their past away; they carry it forward on the currents into the present.
When night arrived, the sound of sanshin and voices grew clearer, and constellations mirrored themselves on the dark sea. Surrendering to the music, he felt time dissolve — a scene he could only call “Timeless Okinawa,” where the spirit of Asatoya Yunta still rides on the Yaeyama wind.
Note on “Yunta”
Yunta is a traditional style of Okinawan folk song, especially common in the Yaeyama Islands. Originally sung as work songs or communal tunes during tasks like planting or hauling, yunta features a call-and-response structure, simple yet rhythmic melodies, and lyrics that often blend everyday life, love stories, and local legends. Today, it survives as a living tradition performed at festivals, gatherings, and cultural events.
